🔹 Regulation of Massage Therapy in New Brunswick
As a professional association, ANBMT does not regulate the profession, but we believe it is important that the public and prospective members understand how massage therapy is regulated in New Brunswick.
Massage therapy in New Brunswick is a regulated profession under the Massage Therapy Act (assented to June 6, 2025) and is overseen by the College of Massage Therapists of New Brunswick (CMTNB).
Regulation exists to protect the public by ensuring transparency, accountability, and professional standards in the delivery of massage therapy services. Only individuals who are registered with the College are legally permitted to use protected titles such as Registered Massage Therapist, Massage Therapist, or Certified Massage Therapist.
Registration with the College helps ensure that:
-
Clients receive care from practitioners who meet legislated education and competency requirements
-
Clients are informed about provider qualifications and insurance eligibility
-
Practitioners are required to adhere to enforceable Standards of Practice and a Code of Ethics
-
There is regulatory oversight and a formal complaints process should concerns arise regarding conduct or care
Individuals who are not registered with the College are not subject to the College’s regulatory oversight, standards, or complaints process.
🔹 Registration with the College of Massage Therapists of New Brunswick (CMTNB)
In order for clients or patients to be eligible for reimbursement through private health insurance plans, massage therapists must be registered with the regulatory College. Clients may not realize that services provided by unregistered individuals are not eligible for insurance reimbursement and may not be covered by professional liability insurance.
For specific questions regarding registration requirements or eligibility, please contact the Registrar of the College of Massage Therapists of New Brunswick, who is best positioned to provide accurate and authoritative guidance.
