Course Description

This one-day, practical course will focus on the therapist’s ability to assess and treat joint stiffness in the ribs.  The techniques will focus on the manual therapy evaluation and treatment of the costotransverse and sternocostal joints. Complimentary at-home exercises that involve thorax stretching and self-mobilization will be taught in detail.  The course is designed to challenge the therapist’s clinical reasoning skills, and the knowledge gained will be easy to apply to clinical practice immediately.

Course Objectives

  • What conditions can you help by improving rib mobility?
  • What is normal range of motion of the thorax? How do you use combined motions to target rib mobility?
  • How do you assess and treat rib joint stiffness or fixations?
  • How do you distract a rib joint?
  • What at home exercises can you give to improve pain, range of motion, and function in the thorax?

What to Bring

  • Portable massage table (1 for 2 participants)
  • Participants must wear appropriate clothing so that the neck, shoulder, and upper back can be exposed for hands-on learning sessions.
  • The instructor will provide a digital course handout, exercise sheets, and certificates of completion for each participant.
