Course Details
TMJ Mastery is a 3-day workshop focusing on principles and applications that explore intra-oral techniques used to treat masticatory dysfunction. Included is a comprehensive visual study of the continuum of articular disc derangement, and the techniques that may restore function or alter further degeneration.

This course is intended to expand upon the TMJ/intra-oral topics covered in the original 2200-hour massage therapy curriculum. Therefore, it is a graduate course where some assumptions will be made regarding your familiarity of the anatomy, physiology and mechanical function of the head, neck and face. The workshop is not meant as a definitive, full evidence-based research project but more of a working set of ideas and principles that might bring new possibilities into a massage therapists' repertoire. We will be incorporating myofascial techniques affecting the masticatory musculature, and developing strategies to assess and restore asymmetrical condylar movement. The intra-oral techniques will also include joint mobilizations that attempt to de-compress and re-establish articular disc space.

About the Instructor

John graduated in 1989 from Sutherland-Chan School in Toronto. In 1992 he attended a mentor’s workshop called “Working in the Mouth” and discovered that many present clients had TMJ Dysfunction – but thought nothing could be done. He has been an instructor in London’s massage therapy school, has presented at provincial massage therapy conferences, inter-national fitness symposiums, an internet based virtual World Massage Conference and published a 3-part series of articles on TMJ dysfunction in a national massage therapy magazine. By the new millennium John’s mentor had retired the TMJ subject and to meet the demand of this niche modality the workshop TMJ Mastery was created. He lives and works in London, Ontario at the clinic Wholistic Body Works and receives TMJD clientele from word-of-mouth, chiropractors, dentists, speech therapists and music/vocal coaches. In his spare time cycle touring and black & white photography allow creative opportunities.
